Trees trimmed for better visibility

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE, APRIL 10. The sight of more than 40 Ashoka trees on the median on Cubbon Road getting their tops chopped off caused consternation among many passers-by on Friday.

The trees were being trimmed all the way from near BRV up to the War Memorial in Minsk Square.

According to the Horticulture Department of the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, the trees were being cut to a height of about 8 feet to 10 feet and treated with chemicals to help them grow again.

Once new branches started sprouting, the trees would be trimmed to an umbrella shape; they will then provide shade without obstructing light.

The trimming work began after the Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, asked the Chief Secretary to consider the possible security threat on a road used by almost all VVIPs visiting Bangalore, BMP officials said.

The trees were affecting visibility by obstructing street-lights and in many cases preventing motorists from seeing traffic signals from a distance.

There was also the risk of branches falling on the road during heavy winds and rain, and causing accidents.

The BMP has asked its contractors to trim all the 240 trees on the median along Cubbon Road over the weekend.

Once this work was completed, they would also begin trimming branches of other trees on both sides of this road and on Raj Bhavan Road.

Trees in private gardens too may get the same treatment if they obstructed the view from the roads.

Though Ashoka trees look good as ornamental trees many consider they are not ideal for gardens as the leaves are said to shelter mosquitoes.
