TDP unimpressed

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, APRIL 11. The Telugu Desam Party today made it clear that it would not be convinced by possible requests from its ally, the BJP, to support statehood for Telangana.

It was the party's firm conviction that all-round development was possible only under the umbrella of bigger States, the TDP spokesman, C. Ramachandraiah, said here in response to the State BJP president's statement that his party would try to "convince'' the ruling party on the Telangana issue.

Speaking to presspersons here today, the TDP leader said that his party had abstained from voting in the Rajya Sabha when the Government tabled the Constitution amendment for creation of Uttaranchal, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. In the case of Telangana, it would oppose any such move outright, he said.

Welcoming the offer by the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president, D. Srinivas, to face any probe, including an inquiry by the CBI, into allegations that he accepted money for allotting party ticket, Mr. Ramachandraiah said persons holding high positions in the Congress should step down pending completion of the probe. This included Mr. Srinivas and the former Congress Legislature Party leader, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, he said.
