CHENNAI, APRIL 11. Engineering education will need `quality assessment system' if it is to produce professionals to meet the country's 21st century requirements, said B.S. Sonde, chairman, National Board of Accreditation, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

Speaking at the Graduation Day of the Misrimal Navajee Munoth Jain Engineering College, Thorapakkam, on Saturday, Mr. Sonde said the National Board of Accreditation, set up in 1994, was a major step in this direction.

Over 4-lakh students in the country opt for engineering education annually. There were around 1,250 engineering colleges and over 1,200 polytechnics offering these courses. Nearly 80 per cent of these colleges were private self-financing institutions, he said. Tamil Nadu, a major player in engineering education, topped in the number of engineering colleges and polytechnics as well as annual intake capacity, Mr. Sonde said.

M.B.N. Mr. Rao said over 54 per cent of India's population was below 25 years and emphasised that `technological manpower' is the nation's strength. The principal, V.K.R. Jeyasingh, presented the graduation day report., which listed the college's achievements. The college, set up in 1994, and run by the Tamil Nadu Educational and Medical Trust has student strength of around 1,500. The college has a no-capitation-fee policy and ranked 33rd among 229 colleges in the State, based on the results of the first, second and fifth semesters, last year. It also produced a topper last year, N. Karthik, (electronic communications engineering), who was ranked first in the University of Madras.
