MADURAI, APRIL 11 . The city today registered a maximum temperature of 38 degree Celsius and a minimum of 26.2 degree Celsius.

Water level

The level in the Periyar dam stood at 108.5 feet. The level in the Vaigai dam was 25.36 feet with a discharge of 30 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit was 823 mcft. The Sothuparai dam received a rainfall of 10 mm.

Commits suicide

Frustrated over his poor performance in the Plus-Two examinations, an 18-year-old student committed suicide at Kamatchipuram here today.

The police said R. Ramesh (18) was found hanging from the ceiling of his house.

Youth stabs girl

A 25-year-old youth went on a stabbing-spree, injuring three persons at the Tamil Nadu Housing Board Colony at Villapuram here this evening.

The police said G. Kannan (25) of Jaihindpuram forced his way into the house of R. Vasantha Kumari (14) and stabbed her. He also attacked her father, K. Radhakrishnan (40) and one of her relatives, when they tried to intervene. However, Kannan was injured seriously, when the girl's family members and neighbours roughed him up. The motive was not known. The injured were admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital.

`Surrender weapons'

In view of the Lok Sabha elections, all licensed gun holders have been asked to surrender their weapons at the nearest police station.

An official release said the licensees should obtain a receipt from the police station after depositing the weapons, which would be returned a week after the results were declared.

Action would be taken against those violating the order, the release said.
