PM shares grief

LUCKNOW, APRIL 12. The Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, tonight consoled the family members of those killed in the stampede here. "We are drowned in grief," said Mr. Vajpayee, who flew in here cutting short his electioneering in Jharkhand. He went straight from the airport to the King George's Medical University campus to meet the family members of the deceased.

He told them that he has sanctioned Rs. 1 lakh from the Prime Minister's Relief Fund for the next of kin of the deceased. The BJP has also announced Rs. 1 lakh for the next of kin of the dead, Rs. 50,000 for the seriously wounded and Rs. 25,000 for those who suffered minor injuries.

Mr. Vajpayee said the incident was a tragic one and did not have any connection with elections. "It is a tragic happening and should not be even linked with elections. Whatever happened was very sad."
