Kambala meet on Thursday

HIRIYADKA (UDUPI DISTRICT), APRIL 12. The Bommarabettu Yuva Bandhavaru will organise a meet of Kambala lovers at the Gandhi Maidan here on Thursday.

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, the Secretary of the District Kambala Committee, K. Gunapal Kadamba, said Kambala participants and lovers from Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts representing nearly 20 Kambalas would participate in the meet.

The meet would decide on the ways and means of improving and popularising Kambala, he said.

Kambala is a buffalo race popular in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts.

During the meeting, shields would be given to Kambala teams with excellent performances. The ace riders of the buffalo teams would be felicitated. Awards would be given in six divisions such as "Kanehalige'', "Hagga Hiriya'', "Haga Kiriya'', "Adda Halli'', "Negilu Hiriya'' and "Negilu Kiriya''.

The Manjeshwara Kambala of Kasargod district in Kerala had been invited to the meet. There were plans to hold camps in which participants would be given tips on improving their techniques in Kambala, Mr. Kadamba said. Nataraj Hegde, President of Bommarabettu Yuva Bandhavaru, was present.
