NEW DELHI, APRIL 12. Many Delhi University teachers feel that the proposed restructured course of B.A (Pass) might be too heavy for below average students and will lead to more students failing in the course. In a meeting called by Manoranjan Mohanty, head of the Committee on B.A (Pass), over 200 teachers from various colleges expressed their views on the issue. While favouring the restructuring of the course, it was proposed by a section of teachers that the entire exercise be started afresh from the college level and the staff council of each college and general bodies be allowed to undertake the entire exercise afresh. According to the participating teachers, the proposed course would lead to an increase in failures, which is over 50 per cent in the regular stream and 70 per cent in correspondence courses as of now. While pointing out that there had been debate on the issue, Prof. Mohanty pointed out that many teachers had read only the first draft of the course and had not known the changes and new additions to the course. "We had two kinds of changes from the teachers. While one set felt that enough consultation had not taken place, many felt that the course content was yet to be discussed. This was only one of the rounds, and we will be discussing the matter extensively before coming out with a final draft. The idea behind the discussion was to get different viewpoints,'' he said.
