Letters to the Editor
Sir, This has reference to the news that 21 persons were killed in a scramble for saris at the birthday function of the BJP leader, Lalji Tandon, in Uttar Pradesh. The incident highlights India's poverty. Nanthini Harikumar, Coimbatore * * * Sir, It was painful that lives were lost for the sake of free saris. The way some of our leaders flaunt their power and wealth is repugnant. The sari tragedy puts the spotlight on the lamentable conditions in which the vast majority of our people lives. Ranjit Rajan, Thrissur, Kerala * * * Sir, If anyone wants to help the poor, it should be done quietly and with dignity. While the leaders are saying that the incident should not be politicised, Mr. Tandon and the BJP should be held responsible as it was clearly a poll gimmick. Reginey and Menaka Daniel, Nagercoil, T.N.
