Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to the DMK leader, M. Karunanidhi's claim that his party mooted the proposal of interlinking major rivers in 1969. Interlinking rivers was actually the pet idea of K.L. Rao, a world renowned expert on river schemes, who was the chairman of the Central Water and Power Commission. It appealed to the then Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who inducted Mr. Rao after his retirement in his Cabinet to give concrete shape to the idea. Mr. Rao prepared a complete scheme with a plan of implementation in phases. The cost however was forbidding. The plan was set aside for consideration later. After Nehru, no one gave serious consideration to it. R. Gopalan, Chennai
