TUMKUR, APRIL 13. Vijay Mallya, Working President of the Janata Party, on Monday questioned the contribution of the former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, for the welfare of farmers. Mr. Mallya, who addressed public meetings at Turuvekere and Sira in Tumkur district, said Mr. Gowda only raised slogans in favour of farmers. As Chief Minister and Prime Minister, Mr. Gowda had not done anything for the benefit of farmers, he alleged, and accused him of pursuing politics in the name of farmers. Accusing the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of doing little for the growth of farmers, Mr. Mallya promised them help to tackle the crisis in the wake of the fall in prices of farm produce and drought if his party was voted to power. A large number of people gathered at the Santhe Maidan at Turuvekere for Mr. Mallya's rally. He displayed the Sword of Tipu Sultan, which he recently acquired from London. He told the gathering that he was privileged to bring back the sword, which was an honour to Karnataka. Mr. Mallya sought the support of voters for his party candidates in 12 of the 13 Assembly constituencies in the district. The party candidate for the Turuvekere seat, M. Visveswaraiah, said Mr. Mallya had agreed to set up a sugar factory in Turuvekere taluk.
