CHENNAI, APRIL 13. The Railway Board has decided to standardise production of electric multiple unit (EMU) coaches on the lines of new generation coaches manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Perambur, for the Andhra Pradesh multimodal transport system. The new generation EMUs are well received by commuters, the Southern Railway General Manager, V. Anand, who is holding additional charge as general manager, ICF, said yesterday. Participating in the 49th Railway Week celebrations organised by the ICF here, he said that last year it produced 1,070 coaches, the highest number since its inception. The ICF designed Deccan Odyssey luxury coaches for the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation with the innovative features of a conference car, a health-cum-gym car and satellite communication facilities on board. It directly exported spare parts for coaches to Tanzania and Sri Lanka to the tune of Rs. 24 lakhs without any assistance from intermediary agencies and bagged a Rs. 6-crore order to supply self-propelled ultrasonic rail test cars for the Research Designs Standard Organisation, Lucknow. The IFC had introduced many safety features in conventional coaches to avoid injuries to passengers during accidents. K.B. Sankaran, former member (Mechanical), Railway Board, presiding, distributed awards to employees for meritorious service.
