Summer flower festival by May-end

KODAIKANAL, APRIL 13. The Collector, P. Senthil Kumar, said the summer flower festival would be held at Kodaikanal in the last week of May.

Talking to mediapersons here recently, after taking part in a consultative meeting with officials, he said elaborate arrangements would be made and all facilities upgraded for tourists from various parts of the world.

Special attention was paid to streamlining of drinking water supply in Kodaikanal during the summer festival. Precautionary measures were also taken to maintain supply.

The Government sanctioned Rs.20 lakhs for streamlining drinking water supply to the hill town. If necessary, lorries would be used to transport water to the town.

He said Rs.2.25 crores had been sanctioned under the Western Ghat Development Fund during this year. Shola forest regeneration, forest fire prevention and watershed programmes had been undertaken with this amount.

A sum of Rs.5 lakhs was sanctioned for undertaking patchwork on roads at Kodaikanal. Road works had been expedited so as to be completed before the commencement of the festival. Three-fourth of the Batlakundu-Kodaikanal ghat road widening work had been completed. However, the widening work would be stopped in the middle of May and resumed after completion of the season. Cleaning work on this route would also be taken up simultaneously for the convenience of tourists and to ease traffic congestion on the Ghat road.

Instructions were given to traffic police to regulate traffic and covert prime roads into one-way to ease congestion during festival days. The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation would also operate special buses.

The inaugural function would be held at the Bryant Park and cultural programmes held at K.R.R. Kalaiarangam.
