Sonia calls off visit to Tura

By Sushanta Talukdar

TURA, APRIL 13. Bad weather forced the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, to cancel her visit here to campaign for her party candidate, Mukul Sangma, pitted against the former Lok Sabha Speaker, Purno Agitok Sangma, from the Tura Lok Sabha constituency. The polling is scheduled for April 20.

Thousands of Congress workers who had assembled here to listen to Ms. Gandhi had to return home disappointed.

People had been gathering at the Chandmari playground here since this morning to attend the rally. Around noon, the Meghalaya Chief Minister, D.D. Lapang, addressing the rally, announced that Ms. Gandhi's programme had been cancelled due to bad weather in Guwahati. He urged the electorate not to be misled by the "foreign origin issue" raised by Mr. Purno Sangma.

Mr. Lapang alleged that Mr. Purno Sangma had been "telling bad things about Ms. Gandhi" and had raised the bogey of her "foreign origin" despite the fact that the Congress had made him the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
