Shiv Sena won't contest in Pondy

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, APRIL 13. The Pondicherry State unit of the Shiv Sena has dropped its plan to contest the Lok Sabha poll here, according to its president, Ram Viswalingam.

Addressing newsmen here today, he said it was earlier decided that the party field its general secretary, V. Rajasekaran. But the party headquarters persuaded the State unit to refrain from contesting the seat. The Bharatiya Janata Party nominee here, Lalitha Kumaramangalam, also held a talk with the functionaries of the Shiv Sena on Monday and sought support.

The Shiv Sena welcomed the agenda for development and good governance brought out by the National Democratic Alliance led by the BJP for the poll, particularly the commitments to ensure Ram temple, enforcement of anti-cow slaughter measures and adoption of common civil code.

Making a scathing attack on the Pattali Makkal Katchi, Mr. Ram Viswalingam said people here witnessed the `atrocities and violence unleashed a few years ago in a Pondicherry village.'
