VELLORE, APRIL 13. `Ilaneer' (tender coconut water) as a nutritive drink for convalescing patients and its efficacy in curing diarrhoea has been stressed by doctors of the Christian Medical College Hospital here. Releasing a technical bulletin in connection with the release of the Adams Brand Pet Packed Tender Coconut Water produced under the Anna Marumalarchi Thittam and Adams Coconut Jam marketed by Super Agro Foods and Marketing Services, Vellore, at a function here on Tuesday, George M. Chandy, Director, CMC Hospital, said when the hospital received a spate of patients suffering from dehydration and hyperpyrexia (temperature of 104 degrees F. and above), the hospital recommended liberal consumption of `ilaneer' to prevent heat strokes among the people, especially children. The irony was that even patients from rural areas got admitted with the above symptoms. The rural people had given up the traditional `kanji' (porridge), `koozh' and `mor' (butter milk) and gone in for branded drinks. Exposure to heat resulted in de-hydration and the hospital advised the patients to drink more buttermilk and tender coconut water. Tender coconut water packed in bottles would be useful to the patients. It would solve the environmental problem caused in the hospital by the dumping of coconut shells after drinking the water, he said. C.K. Jacob, Professor of Nephrology, said that while tender coconut water was good as an oral rehydration fluid and for cure of diarrhoea, patients with chronic kidney problems should avoid the product since the potassium content in it was not conducive to cure of the disease. Banerjee Jesudasan, Head of the Department of Surgery, said tender coconut water contained a lot of electrolytes and glucose and was a sterile and nutritious food recommended for post-operative patients. T.A. Azeem, Chief Executive of the Super Agro Foods and Marketing Services, welcomed the gathering.
