Cuddalore
By Our Special Correspondent
CUDDALORE, APRIL 13. The body of a youth was reportedly dumped into an old borewell at a place between the Indira Nagar Rehabilitation Centre and the Neyveli airstrip near Neyveli Township. On information, the police in coordination with the Fire Services and Rescue personnel have initiated measures to take out the body said to be highly decomposed. The Neyveli Township police have arrested Ramalingam of Vadakku Melur. He is reported to have confessed that the youth, R. Manikandan (20), was done to death and his body was disposed of in the unused borewell of about 600 feet depth. A hunt for his accomplices is on. Police sources said Manikandan, living with his mother, Valarmathi, at Vadakku Melur, had fallen in love with a college girl of the same place. When her parents came to know of this, they convened a ``panchayat'' and told Manikandan not to pursue her anymore. Ms. Valarmathi asked him to go elsewhere and find a livelihood. Manikandan went to Kerala about six months ago, but on April 4 he came back to Vadakku Melur for Panguni Uthiram. He was reported to have met the girl again, drawing criticism from the girl's relatives. However, from the next day, his whereabouts were not known. Ms. Valarmathi lodged a complaint with the police. She reportedly told the police that on April 5 a group had taken Manikandan in an autorickshaw stating that he would be handed over to the women's police station.
