Collector warns employees

CHITTOOR: The district Collector, A. Giridhar, has said instructions have been issued to officials concerned to arrest employees who refuse to receive the appointment orders for election duty.

In a pressnote released here on Tuesday, he said 10 employees refused to receive the orders and they were liable for punishment under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.

Ramanuja fete from tomorrow

TIRUPATI: The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has made elaborate arrangements to observe `tirunakshatram' (birth star) of Vaishnavite saint, Sri Ramanuja, at Tirumala Asthana Mandapam from April 15 to 26.

Ramanuja is known for forming as many as 74 Vaishnavite Peethams and ordaining 700 saints across the country.

Alwar Divya Prabandha Project, a propagation arm of the TTD, is holding a `Nalayira Divyaprabandha Goshti,' where 4,000 Tamil verses sung by 12 Alwars in praise of the Lord would be recited during the nine days.

Lineman in ACB net

HYDERABAD: P. Palturu Basha, a lineman of A.P. Central Power Distribution Company Limited working at Rayadurgam of Anantapur, was arrested by ACB sleuths on Monday on the charge of receiving Rs. 2,000 bribe from a complainant for giving electrical connection. The tainted amount was recovered from him. He would be produced before Special Court for ACB Cases, Hyderabad.

Counselling on April 19

NELLORE: Counselling for untrained Hindi pandits will be conducted at the DEO's office here at 10 a.m. on April 19. Candidates have been urged to appear for the counselling with original certificates.

Recruitment of cops

NELLORE: The District Sainik Welfare Office has invited applications from candidates for 589 vacancies of general duty constables in the Border Security Force (BSF).

The age limit is between 18 and 23 years and the applicant should have passed 10th class.

Those interested can approach the Sainik Welfare Officer with postal order of Rs. 50, two passport size photographs, caste, nativity and education certificates. Applications are available free at the office.

Office-bearers elected

MADANAPALLE: The People's for India Forum formed its ad hoc committee at a meeting held at the NGOs Home here recently. Noor Mohammad was elected president, R. Sreenivasulu would be convenor and 39 others as members.

Doctor for global meet

TIRUPATI: M. Hanumantha Rao, Head of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care, Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS), has been invited to take part in the 13th World Congress of Anaesthesiologists in Paris, France, from April 17 to 23.

Dr. Rao will chair a session on `Transplantation and brain death' at the conference.

PV offers prayers at Tirumala

TIRUPATI: The former Prime Minister, P.V. Narasimha Rao, arrived here from Hyderabad on Tuesday by a private carrier on a two-day pilgrimage. He was given a customary welcome by the Tirupati RDO, Rami Reddy, and the TTD's Deputy Executive Officer, D.S. Prabhakar Rao. Mr. Rao, who was visibly weak and tired, was helped by his aides and crew members in disembarking from the flight. The VIP got into the official car waiting a few feet away on the tarmac and immediately left for Tirumala.

Mr. Narasimha Rao offered prayers in the famous Hill temple of Lord Venkateswara, Tirumala.

Earlier, on his arrival at the posh Padmavathi Guest house, Mr. Rao was accorded a warm reception by TTD officials. He Rao, who is expected to leave Tirumala on Thursday, is also likely to participate in the predawn rituals on Wednesday morning.

Congress assurance to women

ADILABAD: The APCC president, D. Srinivas, has said that more prominence will be given to women in the event of Congress being voted to power. He said women and youth remained neglected by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government at the Centre and Telugu Desam Party in the State.

Addressing a road show at Mancherial cross roads at Nirmal town on Tuesday, the PCC president said the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, had laid claims for empowerment of women, but the DWCRA scheme was started by the Central Government. The APCC president was accompanied by the Nirmal Congress candidate, A. Indrakaran Reddy, and others. He left for Khanapur to address another meeting in the afternoon before leaving for Hyderabad.

Cases against three TDP men

ADILABAD: The Tamsi police registered cases against three Telugu Desam Party workers for allegedly beating up Congress supporters at Waddadi village in Tamsi mandal on April 12. According to the Rural CI, L. Satyanarayana, the TDP candidate for Adilabad Assembly seat, Jogu Ramanna went to Waddadi at 8.30 p.m. for campaigning along with his followers. Congressmen in the village questioned him about the unfulfilled promises made in the past. An argument ensued which resulted in both the groups indulging in fisticuffs. Three Congress workers lodged a complaint with the police. The police registered a case against Swamy and two others of TDP.

Home guard killed in mishap

Cuddapah: A home guard, Balaiah (20), died on the spot and three APSP personnel of the Eighth Battalion at Beechpalle, Mahabubnagar district, sustained injuries when the jeep in which they were travelling was hit by a lorry near Jillella village in Duvvur mandal on Tuesday.

The jeep was part of a convoy in which police parties were going to carry out raids to unearth firearms, illicit weapons and bombs. An APSP head constable of the Eighth Battalion, Mahender Roy, sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to SVIMS at Tirupati. Two APSP constables suffered simple injuries.

Campaign by children opposed

HYDERABAD: The Federation of Atheist and Rationalists' Association today appealed to all political parties and contesting candidates not to involve minor children in election campaign.

N. Innaiah, coordinator, and seven members of the association in a statement said parties were using children in processions for raising slogans and canvassing on behalf of candidates and for carrying buntings and flags. This amounted to child abuse, which, they stated, was highly objectionable and should be avoided by parties. The statement said the Election Commission should take note of this aspect.

Call-centre for poll enquiries

Hyderabad: The Joint Chief Electoral Officer, Lav Agarwal, here today announced the opening of a call-centre operating from Hyderabad with toll-free BSNL telephone no 1100 for responding to all election-related enquiries. The centre, working round-the-clock, is manned by 40 personnel.

He told reporters that voters could obtain details about their position in the electoral rolls and other matter. However, the phone, run on BSNL lines, would not be able to reply to calls from private company phones.

Dry weather prevails

Hyderabad: The State's highest day temperature during the 24-hour period ending this morning reached a peak of 43 degrees, the highest so far for the season. It was experienced by three places, Adilabad, Nizamabad and Rentachintala.

Dry weather prevailed in the State on Tuesday with little change in day temperatures. Day temperatures were significantly above normal at a few places in Telangana, above normal in Rayalaseema and at a few places in Coastal Andhra. Weather will be mainly dry on Wednesday also in the State, according to a bulletin issued by the State Met Office.
