Stern action if there is violation, says CEC

MUMBAI, APRIL 13. Seeking a detailed report from the Uttar Pradesh Government on the distribution of saris at a function in Lucknow that led to death of 22 persons, the Election Commission today said stern action would be taken in case of violation of the model code of conduct.

"The Election Commission would take stern action if there is violation of code of conduct at yesterday's event," the Chief Election Commissioner, T.S. Krishnamurthy, told reporters here.

The U.P. Chief Secretary had been asked to submit a report on whether it violated the model code and any appropriate decision would be taken after studying the report.

He said the EC had not yet approved the ex-gratia of Rs. 1 lakh announced to the kin of the deceased.

It had received the report of the violation of model code by the BJP on misuse of the Central Government's Social Security Scheme for the unorganised sector and ``the decision on the report would be taken in two to three days."

On reports of a Pakistani citizen filing his nomination for the Lok Sabha polls from Jammu and Kashmir, he said information was being sought from the State Election Commission on the media reports. The Chief Election Commissioner said the law and order situation in Maharashtra was normal for and the Central paramilitary forces would be deployed in certain areas on election day.

The Electronic Voting Machine would be stored in places guarded by the paramilitary forces.
