DPCC demands CBI inquiry

NEW DELHI APRIL 13. The Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president, Chaudhary Prem Singh, today demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry into alleged involvement of the Union Labour Minister, Sahib Singh Verma, in a "coal scam" in Chhattisgarh. This had led to a loss of Rs. 100 crores to the exchequer, he alleged.

In a statement, Mr. Prem Singh claimed that some other senior Bharatiya Janata Party leaders were also involved in this scam along with Mr. Verma. Only a CBI inquiry could unearth the truth, he added.

Old people friendly policies

NEW DELHI APRIL 13. Agewell, a non-governmental organisation committed to the welfare of older persons, has appealed to all major political parties to announce specific old people friendly policies in their manifestos.

Lauding the announcement about the setting up of a National Commission for Senior Citizens by the National Democratic Alliance in its manifesto, Himanshu Rath of Agewell said the foundation had in a representation to the Election Commission also demanded that the electoral process be made aged-friendly. And, he said, the Commission has ordered separate queues for the Senior Citizens in the forthcoming general elections all over the country.

Cancer detection camp

NEW DELHI APRIL 13. The Punjab and Sind Bank (PSB) organised a cancer detection camp at its Rajendra Place head office here today. The camp, held in association with the Indian Cancer Society, offered free cancer detection facilities to the public.

Lauding the efforts of the Indian Cancer Society in organising the camp, the Chairman and Managing Director of PSB, V.K. Chopra, said the life-threatening disease could be cured if detected during the initial stages. The General Manager of PSB, R. Sareen, said the bank had had a long association with the Indian Cancer Society and added that the camp had not only created awareness about the disease but also benefited the local people who turned up in good numbers to avail of the facilities.

Ambedkar anniversary

NEW DELHI APRIL 13. On the occasion of birth anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar, the Andhra Pradesh Government will be organising a function where floral tributes would be offered to the great leader at the Andhra Pradesh Bhavan here on Wednesday.

The dignitaries participating in the programme would include the special representative of the Andhra Pradesh Government, C. Lakshmanna.

The A.P. Bhavan SC/ST Employees Welfare Association would organise a series of programmes including folk songs and dance, essay and drawing competitions. A Telugu feature film "Adirindi Alludu" would also be screened.

A date with mathematicians

NEW DELHI APRIL 13. The Mathematical Association of India would be organising "A Date With Mathematicians 2004" at the Physics Lecture Theatre of Delhi University on Wednesday. On the occasion, the Distinguished Service Award would be presented to Prof. Inder Bir Singh Passi.

At the 27th edition of the programme, S.P. Tiwari will deliver a talk on "Phase Transition on Charged and Neutral Bosonic Systems: Superconductivity, Super Fluidity Versus Bose-Einstein Condensation", while Rahul Roy will talk on "Coverage of Space by Random Sets".

AWWA meet

NEW DELHI APRIL 13. The bi-annual meet of Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) was held at the NCC auditorium today. Attended by all regional presidents of the organisation, the AWWA president, Rita Vij, stressed on vocational training, education of children and making women self reliant. She further added that care and support of war widows would be the prime focus of the association. Emphasising the need for a re-look at the standard and quality of education being imparted by AWWA aided schools, particularly those for children with special needs, she laid stress on educating Army families in the concerted drive to eradicate polio.
