Two held, narcotics seized

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, APRIL 13. The Ullal Police on Monday arrested two persons suspected to be peddling narcotics and seized one kg of the illegal substance from them.

While one of the arrested, Lathif (28), a resident of Bolanthuru, was arrested near Thokkottu on the outskirts of the city, the second, Umar Abba, also of Bolanthuru, was arrested on K.C. Road, Kalladka in Bantwal taluk, based on the information given by Lathif.

The Additional Superintendent of Police, Lokesh Kumar, told The Hindu that the seized substance had been sent for confirmatory tests.

Playing down reports in a section of the media that the seized substance was indeed brown sugar, he said preliminary investigation revealed that it was some powdery substance, which resembled brown sugar.

He said the two arrested persons were trying to sell it to gullible customers in the hope of making some quick money.

Noting that the police had registered a case of cheating against the two, Mr. Kumar said if laboratory reports confirmed that the seized substance was brown sugar, they would be booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

He said the street value of brown sugar was Rs. 1 lakh per kilogram, while it was about Rs. 1 crore in the international market.

The two have been remanded in police custody.
