Holiday indeed

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, APRIL 13. People who thronged Aringar Anna Zoological Park in Vandalur today had to return home disappointed. They had thought that the zoo would be kept open on Tamil New Year's Day, despite the fact that the zoo is closed on Tuesdays.

Some of them felt the authorities should not go merely by the rule book as keeping the zoo open on a public holiday will only result in more revenue. Under such circumstances, the regular holiday for the zoo can be shifted to some other day in the week. In this regard, the authorities can intimate the public about their plan in advance.

However, the wildlife authorities said the number of people who came to the zoo today was not much. Those who got in touch with them were informed about the holiday. They also said the schedule of the zoo would be disturbed if the place is kept open on Tuesdays. Earlier, we once tried keeping the zoo open on a Tuesday, which only led to confusion,{lcub}rdquo{rcub} an official said, pointing out that maintenance work is normally carried out on Tuesdays and other holidays. It included cleaning up of the enclosures and water tanks. Moreover, only 50 per cent of the animal keepers work on Tuesday. It is also designated as a rest day for the animals to reduce stress and strain to them when no feed is given to them. When some of the officials went around the zoo, they found only ten visitors at the parking lot, the official said. There was no plan to keep the zoo open on Tuesdays during the summer vacation, he added. Elsewhere in the city, people flocked to places of public importance, including the Marina, shopping malls and temples on the New Year.
