CHENNAI, APRIL 13. There has been an increase in the number of motorcycle thefts on the Marina. Police said against 31 motorcycle thefts last year, 18 were stolen within the first three months this year, on the three-and-half-kilometre stretch between the Light House and Labour Statue on Kamarajar Salai. Victims in their complaint said they had parked their vehicles in less-frequented parking lots. The thieves targeted a particular brand and used duplicate keys to open the fork lock and start the ignition. The stolen motorcycles were then sold to illicit liquor vendors in other districts, police said. Police identified a parking lot close to the swimming pool, opposite the Public Works Department building, as one of the areas from where many motorcycles were stolen and brought in some changes. Of the 10 entry/exit points on the stretch between the Light House and Labour Statue, entry to five of them had been closed, officials said. The culprits were active on Saturdays and Sundays when more people visited the beach. A study by the police showed that more than 8,000 motorcycles were parked on this stretch during weekends. On a weekday, nearly 3,000 were parked, said the officials. Most complaints on motorcycle losses were reported at least three to four hours after the incident, giving the culprits enough time to escape detection. Officials suggested securing the front wheel of the motorcycles with an additional chain-type lock to prevent thefts. K.P. Shanmuga Rajeswaran, Deputy Commissioner, Mylapore, said, "The police are issuing free tokens during weekends and holidays, when vehicle flow is high. This will help bring down motorcycle thefts on the Marina."
