VISAKHAPATNAM, APRIL 13. Electioneering in the district has reached feverish pitch with the rival political parties stepping up their campaigning. The road show proposed by the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, at K. Kotapadu and other areas has pepped up the cadre of the Telugu Desam Party, which is trying to retain its base here. The Congress rank and file, who want to spring a surprise to the yellow brigade, are upbeat following the overwhelming response to the road shows of the former Congress Legislature Party leader, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. "In places like Pendurthy and Sabbavaram, half of the residents thronged his yatra,'' a Congress leader told The Hindu on Tuesday. Now, the TDP and the BJP are banking on Mr. Naidu's road shows. They hope that Mr. Naidu would neutralise the goodwill for Congress generated by the successful tour of Dr. Reddy. This, they think, is of utmost importance particularly after the lukewarm response to the joint meeting addressed recently by the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Mr. Naidu at the Port stadium. The TDP chief is scheduled to hold road shows on Wednesday evening at Anandapuram, Kothavalasa, Pendurthi, Vepagunta, Gopalapatnam, NAD Kotha Road, Gajuwaka, Sriharipuram, Malkapuram, Scindia and Convent junctions. The former Chief Minister, N. Janardhan Reddy, who is in the race for Visakhapatnam Lok Sabha seat, is pinning high hopes on the campaign of his party president, Sonia Gandhi. She will be addressing a meeting at the Port stadium on Thursday. He is also trying to bring in Priyanka Vadra. The BJP which is contesting from Visakha-I, the only constituency in the three north coastal Andhra districts, is trying to cash in on filmy glamour by romping in the Union Minister, Shatrughan Sinha, Tollywood heroine Rambha and comedian Kallu Chidambaram. More cinema stars are expected to descend on the city in the next few days.
