Piped cooking gas for East Delhi now

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, APRIL 13. Nearly 7,000 houses across Patparganj in East Delhi out of a total of around 50,000 across the Capital would get Piped Natural Gas (PNG) for cooking purposes during this financial year, according to the programme drawn up by Indraprastha Gas Limited, which today put East Delhi on its PNG map.

Speaking at the inauguration of the PNG project in East Delhi, the Director (Commercial) of IGL, P.S. Bhargava, said the company would be considerably expanding its operations in the field this year. Having so far provided well over 14,000 connections in South Delhi and Central Delhi, it would now be making foray into North Delhi, East Delhi and some other parts of the Capital.

The official said the project in East Delhi would target some of the largest clusters of housing societies. Stating that there was a potential of around 7,000 households in Patparganj alone, he said, IGL - the sole supplier of PNG and CNG in Delhi - plans to lay around 100 km of various types and sizes of pipes in the area by the end of the year and would be supplying the convenient and economical cooking gas to some of the houses in Patparganj as early as July this year.

Stating that Patparganj held out an immense potential for expansion of the PNG network as there are a large number of apartments in the area, the official said the company has set itself a target of reaching out to 50,000 new household in the current fiscal.

Already, he said, IGL is supplying PNG in several areas of New Delhi such as Kaka Nagar, Bapa Nagar, Pandara Road, Chanakyapuri and Sundar Nagar besides parts of South Delhi like Nizamuddin, Maharani Bagh, Pant Nagar, New Friends Colony, Jor Bagh, Asiad Village, Sarojini Nagar, Gulmohar Park, Golf Links and Ishwar Nagar.

During the current financial year, it plans to spread out to newer areas reaching Mayur Vihar Phase-I, Vasant Kunj, Gulmohar Enclave, Hauz Khas, CPWD Flats in Sectors 8, 9, 12 and 13 of R.K. Puram, Andrews Ganj, Hudco Place and Kidwai Nagar. Besides, the company will also start laying a pipeline in Sectors 9, 13 and 14 of Rohini by May 2004.

For the residents of several East Delhi colonies, the inauguration of the project today marked a big moment as now they will be able to access an uninterrupted supply of gas in a very convenient and safe manner. A resident of Samachar Apartments, who had registered for the supply last year, said the coming in of piped gas would most importantly do away with the need of carrying heavy cylinders up and down the staircases and would also do away with the problems associated with safe storage of the liquid petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders.
