Congressmen protest against Adityan candidature

By Our Staff Reporter

TUTICORIN, APRIL 14 . As the Congress candidate for the Tirunelveli Parliamentary seat, R. Dhanushkodi Adityan, entered his constituency near Tirunelveli this morning after a month-long camp in New Delhi, around 800 Congressmen staged a demonstration at the First Gate here today, protesting the high command's decision to field him.

Saravanan, district president of the party traders' wing, presided over the agitation.

Speakers at the protest said the party had nominated a "tainted personality, who was facing several criminal charges."

The Former MLA, Veldurai, said the party had made it clear that aspirants, who had "a poor performance record" in the past and facing criminal charges, should not be given a chance to contest the Lok Sabha polls.

However, the nomination of Mr. Dhanushkodi Adityan for the Tirunelveli constituency had "irreparably damaged the reputation" of the party, he said.

Most of the speakers said H. Vasanthakumar, president of the party traders' wing, be fielded as "official candidate". "If Mr. Vasanthakumar is not given chance, he will be nominated against Mr. Dhanushkodi Adityan, which will certainly ensure the defeat of the tainted official candidate," they said. All out efforts would be made to inflict an "unforgettable defeat" on Mr. Adityan, they said.

A former state secretary of the party said the nomination of the former union minister had only triggered wild protest within the party, which would surface at any time. Meanwhile, Mr. Dhanushkodi Adityan returned to Tirunelveli and appealed to the party cadres to eschew factions and work for his victory. He also told the reporters at Tirunelveli after the party workers meeting that he would not hesitate to meet Mr. Vasanthakumar and other leaders of the rival faction to ensure their support to him.
