Campus Jottings: `Studies and sports, equally vital'

As a common platform to analyse the past achievements and future goals in the field of sports, the annual sports meet of the National Engineering College, Kovilpatti, was conducted on its premises recently. Various sports events were organised at the meeting, which was declared open by ex-Olympian of the Indian hockey team, M. Muneer Sait. He called upon the students to concentrate on their studies while giving an equal importance to sports.

He also gave an account of the scholarships being sponsored by the Union and State Governments and the reservations in professional colleges for meritorious sportsmen. Another ardent lover of sports, T.K. Rajendran, Inspector General of Police, Madurai (South Zone), said sportsmen, backed by sound physique, should work hard with determination with an eye on achieving enviable positions in the society.

Medals and certificates were presented to the winners and the Fine Arts Club of the college gave a perfect blend of light music and dance to the audience. Apart from this, the students also staged skits with contemporary relevance.

Talents of the educated youth are tremendous irrespective of caste, creed, religion or language. Though manpower is a valuable resource in our country, still a large percentage of our masses are disabled and destitute. Proper education and training will help the physically challenged persons take part in the nation-building exercise.

The Nadar Saraswathi College of Arts and Science in Theni recognised and honoured G. Sugapriya, a II year B.Sc. (Computer Science) physically challenged (post polio paraplegic of both lower limbs) student, who stood first in three major subjects in the first and second year of university examinations, at the annual day celebrations held here recently. She won three prizes for her major subjects and an overall trophy for academic excellence.

The Mother Teresa University Vice-Chancellor, Anandhavalli Mahadevan, gave away the prizes. In her special address, Ms. Mahadevan said students should develop leadership qualities, build confidence and strive honestly and sincerely to achieve their goal.

The college secretary, M. Amarnath, and the joint secretary, K. J. Arunjunaikani, and the principal, K. Girija, took part.

The academic year is drawing to a close. For the first and second year students of under- graduate courses, the vacation is looked forward to for merry-making. For most of the final year students, the hunt for openings in the job market begins.

Realising the hardships of the fresh graduates, the Devanga Arts College at Aruppukottai organised a two-day campus interview for recruiting customer support and technical support executives for a leading corporate major last month.

The interview, comprising group discussion, listening comprehension, reading comprehension and test in computer knowledge, got an overwhelming response from students.

The college has now planned to impart an intensive training for students to enable them to get placements in call centres.
