Letters to the Editor
Sir, Your editorial, "Where India does not shine" (April 14) on the Supreme Court's ruling in the Best Bakery case was timely and thoughtful. The unwavering commitment to justice demonstrated by the apex court, which ordered a re-trial, has shown that there is still a ray of hope for the common man. As for the Narendra Modi Government, it violated the constitutional rights of the peace loving citizens by not providing them equal protection of law.
S. Rajasekhar,
* * * Sir, The ruling is a clear indictment not only of the Modi regime but also of the Centre for its failure to act when the State Government refused to maintain law and order.
G.M. Rama Rao,
* * * Sir, The judgment is a clear signal that the present dispensation in Gujarat is not worthy of continuing in office. The Modi Government should resign immediately to save the credibility of the BJP Governments in other States. It is unfortunate that no alliance partner of the BJP has sought Mr. Modi's resignation.
K.M. Lakshmana Rao,
* * * Sir, It is a landmark judgment, no doubt. But people have been killed in other parts of India too, which has gone unnoticed by politicians and courts. The judicial system should treat all on a par.
S. Jayachandran,
* * * Sir, The Gujarat riots were an offshoot of the Godhra carnage, in which over 50 Ram Sevaks were killed. Anger and retaliation are human tendencies. Mr. Modi himself has regretted the incidents. He is now concentrating on the economic development of the State and striving hard to make it a favourite investment destination. Let bygones be bygones. It is everyone's responsibility to ensure that communal riots do not recur.
V.S. Sankaran,
