KANNUR, APRIL 15. Alphonsachan, the main character in M. Mukundan's novel, `Deivathinte Vikrithikal', is in the throes of a rebirth, so to speak, in a medium that draws on magic, theatre and visual art as the magician, Gopinath Muthukad, is to stage an innovative performance at the Puthalam Sree Bhagavathi Temple in Mahe on April 17. ``Perhaps, Alphonsachan is the only character lucky to have three births. The character that I gave birth to in the novel is the central character in the film version of the novel made by Lenin Rajendran. The magician in the novel is now being given another rebirth in the medium of magic,'' said Mr. Mukundan at a press conference convened by the organisers of the event here today. The show, titled `Kalathinte Vismayangal', is expected to be a unique experience for the people of Mahe (Mayyazhi), who form the enduring milieu in Mr. Mukundan's novels, `Mayyazhi Puzhayude Theerangalil' and `Deivathinte Vikrithikal'. That the show will be performed at the temple which, according to the novelist, is the Aditiya Temple in the novel will give a pristine backdrop to the event. Mr. Muthukad said the show to be inaugurated by Lenin Rajendran at 6.30 p.m. was only a magical representation of Alphonsachan and his life as a magician in the novel. ``I have been attracted to the novel, which depicts the life of Alphonsachan as a human being with his gifts of magic, his dreams, his agonies and his failures as a magician,'' Mr. Muthukad said. The 40-minute show would recreate the situations as they were in the novel, Mr. Muthukad said adding that the show would also use the words and slang in the novel. He also said that he did not intend to stage the show in any other place because it was not conceived with a commercial motive. The show would be open to the public, he added. Mr. Mukundan also said that Mr. Muthukad did not expect any return from the show.
