LUCKNOW, APRIL 15. The Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, again triggered speculation about his retirement plans as he filed his nomination papers today from the Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency here. Addressing the Bharatiya Janata Party workers after filing his nomination, Mr. Vajpayee said he had contemplated retiring from politics prior to the elections but ``postponed'' it due to pressure from aides and "friends" in other parties. ``I was not interested in contesting this time, but gave up after pressure from my friends ... they did not allow me to retire from politics,'' he said. ``As a disciplined BJP worker, I obeyed the orders.'' He, however, said that ``there should be some limit for a person to hold any post.'' Referring to a poser put to him recently why he had deferred his retirement plans, he said: ``Frankly I do not like such questions being asked ... I came to politics with a great mission to serve the nation." He said democracy was not about one individual or party and in India it reflected the wishes and aspirations of over 100 crore people. The country's democratic system had seen many elections and at times it appeared that democracy would be turned into authoritarianism but the people did not allow it, he said, adding: ``We will ensure that democracy is preserved at all cost.'' He exhorted the youth to join him in nation building and the making of a "Mahan Bharat." - UNI, PTI
