Suspended

MANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALOREMANG, APRIL 15.APRIL 15.AP Five police personnel of the District Armed Reserve battalion, who were on guard duty at the District Wenlock Hospital on the day two undertrials escaped from there, have been suspended. This follows an instruction from the Inspector-General of Police (Prisons), Y.S. Rao, to the Superintendent of Police, P.K. Thakur to initiate disciplinary action against the policemen. Those suspended include the head constable, Govinda Moolya, and Shekar Kulal, Nagesh M., Gangadhar K., and Narendra, constables.

Seized

MANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALOREMANG, APRIL 15.APRIL 15.AP Officials of the Excise Department raided a hotel in the city and seized illicit liquor.

A departmental press release said a special excise team raided a hotel at Morgan's Gate Junction and seized liquor allegedly stored illegally there. Ravi Jogi and Harish Shetty were arrested in this connection and a case was registered against them.

The department has urged people having information about illegal sale of liquor to call 2224726.

Telecast

MANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALOREMANG, APRIL 15.APRIL 15.AP Bangalore Doordarshan will telecast a bharatanatya performance by Sreelatha Nagaraj, a disciple of Sharadamani Shekar, on Chandana Channel on Friday at 9 a.m. The programme will be repeated on Tuesday at 11.20 p.m.

Gold medal

MANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALOREMANG, APRIL 15.APRIL 15.AP Suresh B., a Home Guard attached to the Puttur unit of the Dakshina Kannada Home Guards, has secured the gold medal in the advanced fire fighting course conducted by the Home Guards and Civil Defence College, Bangalore, according to a press release from the District Commandant, Shivaprasad Rai.

No liquor

MANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALOREMANG, APRIL 15.APRIL 15.AP The district administration has imposed a ban on the sale of liquor in view of the elections to the Assembly and Lok Sabha to be conducted on April 26. A press release from the Deputy Commissioner, Arvind Shrivastava, said the ban would be in force from 6 a.m. on April 24 to 6 a.m. on April 27 and from 6 a.m. on May 12 to 6 a.m. on May 14.

Fodder sale

MANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALOREMANG, APRIL 15.APRIL 15.AP The Farm Science Centre, Mudigere, has developed good varieties of fodder, soil, grass capable of conserving water, and straw.

Boycott

MANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALOREMANG, APRIL 15.APRIL 15.AP <150> Seventy women voters at Odeyara Hosahalli and Chikkabeechanahalli in Hunsur taluk have decided to boycott the coming elections in protest against the "indifference" of the district administration to their demand to close down liquor shops in their villages. The sale of liquor in these villages has not only affected 500 families but also the functioning of some self-help groups. The campaign against the sale of liquor is being led by the gram panchayat President, Mangalamma. According to them, the decision to seek cancellation of licence of four liquor shops in the two villages was taken at a meeting of the Karnataka State Social Welfare Board, Prathibe, and women members of self-help groups held some time ago.

Anniversary

MANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALOREMANGALOREMANG, APRIL 15.APRIL 15.AP <150> The 113th birth anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar was celebrated here on Wednesday at a simple function held at the Deputy Commissioner's office.

Speaking as the chief guest, Sannarama, Reader, Department of Kannada, Kuvempu University, noted that Dr. Ambedkar was one of the main architects of the Constitution, which envisaged freeing India from social, economic, and political discrimination.
