Students discharged from hospital

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, APRIL 15 . The students of an Adi Dravidar Boys Hostel, who have been admitted to a hospital on complaints of `food poisoning', were discharged today.

Nineteen students of the hostel at Tirupparankunram were rushed to the Infectious Diseases Hospital at Austinpatti near here and admitted in the early hours on Wednesday following vomiting and diarrhoea.

The IDH medical officer, S. Chandrasekaran, said the students were normal and it was a case of `food allergy'.

As such there was no sign of water or food contamination, he said.

However, the hospital is still awaiting the laboratory test reports from the Microbiology department of the Madurai Medical College.

The general physicians discharged the boys as they had recovered well after treatment.

Meanwhile, the District Adi Dravidar Welfare Officer, K. P. Ananthasayanam, said today that the food prepared in the Adi Dravidar Hostels was good and there was no fault in its preparation.

He said this incident could not be taken as an indicator of the state of hostels run by the department.

The officer also ruled out the possibility of a possible water or food contamination.

"It was just a case of students taking food that was stored for a long time," he said.
