VISAKHAPATNAM, APRIL 16. Holder Metro CC lost to former winner East Coast Railway by seven runs in the semifinals of the 11th annual The Hindu Trophy prizemoney tournament at the VDCA Stadium here on Friday. Railway will meet another former winner and last year's runner-up, Visakhapatnam Port Sports Council, in Sunday's final. VPSC defeated Sport XI by seven wickets in the other semifinal at the Zinc Stadium. Despite a fine century by R.V.Ch. Prasad (100, 5x4, 5x6), Metro could not reach the target as the Railway spinners, M.N. Vikram Varma (three) and G. Shankara Rao (two), along with A.V.N. Murthy (two) pegged it back. Metro finished at 237 seven runs adrift in the last over even as B. Sriharsha, S. Kranthi Kumar and K. Naga Gangadhar tried to push the score along. Earlier useful knocks by Saikumar (44), Narendra Kumar (31), Shankar Rao (37) and S.A. Ramkishore (20 not out) saw the Railway side reach 244 for seven.
Prasad and Laxman Kishore picked up two wickets each for Metro.
In the other match, VPSC mediumpacer N. Syam Sundar claimed five wickets and spinner H. Vatekar two to restrict Sports to 110. K.N.V. Krishnamohan cracked a breezy unbeaten 75 (9x4) to lead the Port team to a comfortable win.
East Coast Railway 244 for seven in 50 overs (Y.V. Saikumar 44, G. Shankar Rao 37, D. Narendra Kumar 31) bt Metro CC 237 in 49.4 overs (R.V.Ch. Prasad 100, B. Sriharsha 27, M.N. Vikram Varma three for 24).
