Rs.9.4-cr. proposal to link open wells with Vaigai dam

By Our Staff Reporter

DINDIGUL, APRIL 16 . The Collector, P. Senthil Kumar, today announced that the district administration had sent a proposal worth Rs.9.4 crores to the Centre to link open wells supplying drinking water to Chinnalapatti, Dindigul and Vadipatti and other towns and villages with the Vaigai dam through pipes to streamline the water supply system.

Talking to media persons here today, he said massive efforts had been made to meet the drinking water crisis in urban and rural areas. The State Government had already sanctioned Rs.4.5 crores for undertaking various drinking water projects in the district.

To a question on the prevailing water crisis, Dr. Senthil Kumar said that the 12.5 feet of water, (above zero level) in the Athoor Kamarajar dam would be sufficient to supply water to Dindigul till September. However, the Government had granted Rs.20 lakhs for transportation of water through lorries to the town. Steps had been taken to float tenders.

In Palani, the storage in the Palar-Porunthalar dam was sufficient. A token amount of Rs.2 lakhs had been granted to the Palani municipality for lorry transportation.

Similarly, the water position in the Kodaikanal municipality had improved, thanks to the short but heavy rain last week. A sum of Rs.20 lakhs had been sanctioned for the municipality for transportation of water by lorries to the town in case of emergency.

There was water shortage in 20 out of total 24 town panchayats. A sum of Rs.25 lakhs under the calamity relief fund and Rs.10 lakhs under drought relief fund had been sanctioned for streamlining drinking water supply. In panchayats, Rs.80 lakhs had been given for drought relief works.

Besides, Rs.3 crores, sanctioned by the 11th State Finance Commission, were disbursed for providing drinking water to weak panchayats. The Centre had granted Rs.1 crore for desilting open wells and purchase of spare-parts for borewells. The district administration had purchased spare parts for Rs.36 lakhs so far.

The Chinnalapatti town panchayat had been procuring water from the SIPCOT wells to supply water to all wards.

Drinking water project works had been undertaken on a war-footing to ease the drinking water crisis. Drought was acute owing to the failure of monsoon for the fourth successive year.
