State Govt. has failed to use Central funds, says Acharya

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, APRIL 17. The Vice-President of the State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party and legislator, V.S. Acharya, has criticised the State Government for allegedly not utilising Central funds effectively.

Addressing a press conference here today, he said that the Congress Government had failed to implement the centrally assisted developmental programmes such as those for poverty alleviation, infrastructure development, employment generation, rural electrification, farming, and rural development. He said that though the Centre had released substantial funds for these programmes, the State Government had not utilised them.

The primary aspect of poverty alleviation was to identify people living below the poverty line, but the Government was yet to complete the task. This was why several programmes were remaining only on paper despite the Union Government releasing funds promptly. He cited the example of Annapurna Yojana and Antyodaya Yojana.

On infrastructure development, Dr. Acharya accused the Congress Government of not using funds for drinking water projects in Bellary, Mangalore, and Mysore districts. He said the State had not utilised Rs. 1,838 crore granted by the Centre for the development of the National Highways. It had also not implemented the Grameen Sadak Yojana for which Rs. 176 crore provided by the Centre. The Rs. 1,000-crore Central Road Fund had not been used in the past three years, he alleged.

Listing the alleged failure of the State Government on other fronts, Dr. Acharya said that the 100 bridges project of the Housing and Urban Development Corporation and the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development had not been completed. He appealed to the voters in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts to vote for the BJP.
