Somayagam organisers deny charges

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, APRIL 17. The organisers of the Somayagam planned to be held at Mahadeva Temple, Thuravoor in Alappuzha district, today denied the charges raised by a group of Vedic scholars against them.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, the leaders of Somayaga Nirvahana Samithy, Thuravoor, said that the accusations raised by Thaikkad Vaidikan Neelakantan Namboothiri and Cherumukku Vallabhan Namboothiri against the Samithy were baseless. They said that the decision to change some of the Acharyas of the Yaga was taken as they were found to be lacking in spiritual purity and integrity. The organisers alleged that the Acharyas, who were removed from the Somayaga, had demanded exorbitant amounts as remuneration.

The Samithy leaders accused a group of Vedic scholars of showing reluctance to conduct Vedic rituals south of the river Periyar. They said that a Brahmin who aspired to be the Rithwik of a yagna with the aim of making money was disqualified from assuming that post. They also stressed the need to bring the Vedic rituals to the people, instead of keeping them as the preserve of an elite group. The Samithy leaders, however, declared that they did not want to enter into any controversy regarding the issue.
