JD(U) to contest five seats in Tamil Nadu

NEW DELHI, APRIL 17. The Janata Dal (United) will field five candidates in Tamil Nadu, at least six in Kerala, two in Madhya Pradesh and one each in Rajasthan and Orissa for the Lok Sabha elections.

The party, which is contesting as a constituent of the People's Alliance in Tamil Nadu, has announced candidates for five seats, including two women.

The People's Alliance, comprising the Dalit Panthers of India, the Puthiya Tamizhagam, the Makkal Tamil Desam and the Indian National League, is contesting on the JD(U)'s arrow symbol.

It has fielded the sitting MLA, M. Appavu, from Tirunelveli, and a fisherfolk leader, Muthu Gunashekaran, from Chennai North. Advocate, Jesu Paulraj, will contest from Tiruchirappalli.

The two women candidates are social workers, Pushpa Sachan from Dindigal and Sophia from Nilgiris.

According to the party's general secretary, Javed Raza, in Kerala senior leaders K. Sivaprasad will contest from Kollam, P.J. Kurien from Alappuzha, Jose Verghese from Kottayam, Munnambam Hamsa from Ernakulam, Oseph Anto from Thrissur and P.C. Madhavan from Kozhikode.

A senior party office-bearer, I. Rehman, will contest from Bhopal, while an ex-serviceman Narayan Kharadi will be the candidate from Jhabua (ST). Jeetmal Khat, sitting MLA, has been nominated from Banswara (ST) and prominent social worker, Sushant Kumar Chaudhary, will contest from Bhubaneswar.

The party has fielded five candidates for the Assembly elections in Orissa. These include Kishore Das (Baripada), Shakaya Singh Mishr (Cuttack City), Pradeep Patnaik (Khurad), Sachidanand Das (Khandpara) and Kishore Hota (Birmaharajpur).

The Tamil Nadu JD (U) president, Rajasekaran, will be in charge of the alliance's campaign while T.K. Murthy will coordinate on behalf of the JD(U).

The People's Alliance is planning a rally in the State in the last week of April, which will be jointly addressed by the JD(U) leaders, George Fernandes, Sharad Yadav, Nitish Kumar and Digvijay Singh, along with the former Karnataka Chief Minister, S.R. Bommai.
