Drop in humidity

Gannavaram Airport recorded a maximum temperature of 42.6 degree Celsius and a minimum of 26.6 degree Celsius on Saturday. Humidity, which was recorded 73 per cent in the morning, dropped to 41 per cent in the evening.

Commodity prices

The following were the prices (in rupees per kg) of essential commodities in the local wholesale market on Saturday: groundnut oil-53, palmolein oil-45.75, sunflower oil-52.50, tamarind (flower variety)-26 to 33, tamarind (karipuli variety)-33 to 42, chillies-18 to 23 rice (2716) -11 to 11.50, rice (super fine) -13 to 13.50, rice (sambamasoori) -13.50 to 14, black gram-13.50 to 14 and red gram-24 to 29.50.

Power shutdown

There will be no power supply in some areas in Governorpet and Patamata sections of the Southern Power Distribution Company of Andhra Pradesh from 6 a.m. and 12 noon on Saturday. The affected areas are: Challapalli Bungalow, Eluru Road, Police Control room, Lenin Centre, Arundelpet, A.S. Rama Rao Road, IMA hall Alibaig, Sivalayam, Prakasam Road, Atta Rattaiah street, Swarna Palace hotel, Grand Residency hotel, Annarpurna and Sakuntala theatres, Patamata 60 foot road, Autonagar III phase, APIIC colony, RR Gardens, Vijayanagar Colony, Vijaya Lakshmi Colony, Patamata Telephone exchange, Lakshmi Agro products and Sridhar rubber industries.

Awareness programme

Ignorance is the primary cause behind people's belief in witchcraft and sorcery, said the writer, G. Samaram.

Delivering a lecture on witchcraft and sorcery, Dr. Samaram said violence was perpetrated against innocent people by those who benefit from such superstitious beliefs and nobody protests against it.

Honour for constable

The APSP constable, M. Veeriah, was given a black belt for his skills in karate. The honour was bestowed on him by the Olympic Association south India director, J. Rajeswara Rao, at a function recently. Mr. Veeraiah participated in the 2004 kick boxing championship conducted by the Olympic Association and stood second in the contest.

Bank customers' demand

The All Indian Bank Customers' Association has demanded a substantial cut in the interest rates of bank borrowings.

In a statement, the president of the association, A.D.V. Mathew Paul, regretted that even though the deposit rates have been falling steadily, the bankers have not been taking corresponding steps to reduce the interest rates on the advances.
