More amenities for 4 Chennai burial grounds

By P. Oppili

CHENNAI, APRIL 18. Four burial grounds maintained by the Chennai Corporation are getting a facelift. Under the first phase the civic body has started renovation work in bigger grounds - Krishnampet in Triplicane, Moolakothalam, Mylapore near DGP's office and Otteri - in September last.

While works have been completed in Mylapore, the Otteri burial ground will be ready by June, say corporation officials. The Krishnampet burial ground will be ready by August and the Moolakothalam facility before the end of this year.

A senior official said around Rs. 25 lakhs was being spent at each place. The works involved clearing bushes, relaying approach roads, laying concrete roads from the entrance to cremation sheds, planting saplings, improving bathrooms and toilets, fixing gates at the entry and exit points and building perimeter walls.

Today, the burial grounds wear a look of a well-maintained city park. Before the work began, the Mylapore burial ground used to be a picture of neglect.

A few workers at the Mylapore facility said the place attracted anti-social elements for nefarious activities. In the absence of proper sanitation facilities, people from nearby slums used it as an open toilet.

A new concrete road was laid from the entrance up to the cremation sheds. The caretaker's room was improved and a lawn created on the right side near the entrance. A meeting with the local fishing village leader was held and the leaders pledged their support for proper upkeep of the place, they said.

Earlier, many of the tombs were in a dilapidated condition. After the renovation works started, some of the relatives who visited the place for paying homage to the dead appreciated the efforts of the civic body. The civic personnel did not stop with that. To improve the beauty of the place, they reconstructed the damaged tombs and repainted the monuments.
