`Sonia will be PM if Congress gets a majority'

By Luv Puri

JAMMU, APRIL 18. The leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and senior Congress leader, Manmohan Singh, today said that the foreign origin of the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, was not a poll issue. He added that if the Congress got a majority on its own, Ms. Gandhi would be the Prime Minister.

At a press conference here, Dr. Singh said, "We have aligned with several political parties based on principles and will collectively decide about the Prime Minister candidate after the polls. The decision would be taken by consensus."

Asked who would be the Congress' candidate if the party got a majority, he said, "Ms. Gandhi is leading the party and if the party is able to form the government on its own, she will be the Prime Minister."

On his candidature, he said, "I know my limitations and I can say without any hesitation that I am not a candidate for Prime Ministership."
