`Urban areas' identified for electioneering

TIRUNELVELI, APRIL 18. The district administration has identified the following areas as `urban areas,' where political parties can campaign with the public address system between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. only.

In a statement, the Collector and District Election Officer, Sunil Paliwal, said that the areas falling under the Tirunelveli Corporation, Tenkasi, Shencottai, Kadayanallur, Puliyangudi and Sankarankoil municipalities, Pudur (Shencottai), Achchanputhur, Vadakarai Keezhpidaagai, Paimpozhil, Courtallam, Ilanji, Melagaram, Aayikudi, Saambavar Vadakarai, Keezhapaavoor, Sundarapandiyapuram, Alangulam, Surandai, Vasudevanallur, Sivagiri, Royagiri, Manimuththaaru, Ambasamudhram, Cheranmahadevi, Kallidaikurichi, Mukkoodal, Veeravanallur, Vickramasingapuram, Alwarkurichi, Gopalasamudhram, Mela Seval, Pattamadai, Kalakkad, Ervadi, Nanguneri, Moolakkaraipatti, Thirukkurungudi, Panagudi, Thisayanvilai, Valliyoor, Naranammalpuram, Sankar Nagar North and Thiruvengadam town panchayats would be considered `urban areas' and campaigning in these areas through the public address system should be stopped by 10 p.m.

Parties could use speakers in other parts of the district between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m., as these areas would be considered as `rural areas.'

"Any violation will be seriously viewed and speakers and vehicles used to mount the public address system confiscated," Mr. Paliwal said.

Central Observers

The Central Observers, who are expected to arrive here on April 20 to monitor the electoral process in the Tirunelveli Parliamentary constituency and the Tenkasi reserved segment, have been provided with separate telephones and members of the public and candidates may contact them at the following numbers.

For the Tirunelveli constituency, the observers will stay at the Circuit House, Vannarpettai, Tirunelveli.

The General Observer, K.S. Rajendra Kumar, Principal Secretary, Urban Development Department, Kolkata, can be contacted at 0462 - 2502895 and another General Observer, Dhanraj N. Khamatkar, Commissioner, Kalyan Dombivili Municipal Corporation, Maharashtra, can be contacted at 0462-2502896.

The Expenditure Observer, Narendra Viswanath Kulkarni, IC and CES, Joint Commissioner, Customs and Excise Pune III Commissionerate, Pune, will be available at 0462 - 2502897.

For the Tenkasi reserve segment, the observers will stay at the Circuit House, Courtallam.

The General Observer, Gorekh Megh, secretary, Department of Fisheries, Maharashtra, can be contacted at 04633 - 210688 and another General Observer, Phateh Singh, Director of Employment, Haryana, may be contacted at 04633 - 210699.

The Expenditure Observer, Sumeet Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Income Tax, Vadhore, will be available at 04633 - 210677.
