CHENNAI, APRIL 18. The Chennai Corporation Commissioner, M.P.Vijaykumar, was appointed district election officer (DEO) today. The order was issued by the Election Commission, giving the Commissioner additional responsibility in place of the Chennai Collector. The Collector was made DEO a few years back by the Commission. This led to several operational bottlenecks and posed practical problems to local-level election staff. M. Rajaram, an IAS officer, director of Tamil Nadu Rural Development Department, replaced the Chennai Collector, V.Kannuchamy. The Election Commission ordered that Mr.Kannuchamy be shifted. Mr.Vijaykumar will remain the returning officer of the Central Chennai parliamentary constituency. Mr. Rajaram will hold the post of the returning officer of North Chennai parliamentary constituency. Addressing mediapersons at the Chennai Collectorate, Mr. Rajaram said complaints of addition and deletion of names from the electoral rolls must be dealt with by the Chennai Corporation. "I am here to perform my duty as a returning officer. Chennai administration duty is not new to me as I have already served as a Deputy Commissioner." A government release said separate orders would be issued for a new posting for Mr. Kannuchamy.
