ECoRSA wins The Hindu Trophy

VISAKHAPATNAM, APRIL 18. East Coast Railway Sports Association (ECoRSA) regained the 11th edition of the The Hindu Trophy, beating last year's runner-up Visakhapatnam Port Sports Council (VPSC) by three wickets in an exciting final here on Sunday. It received the silver rolling trophy and a cash award of Rs. 10,000. VPSC received Rs. 5,000.

ECoRSA was at one stage 99 for five in the 28th over chasing a victory target of 197. But it pulled itself up through a 51-run stand between M.N. Vikram Varma (42, 4x4) and S.A. Ramkishore (21).

Later Madhusudhan and K. Gangadhar Kumar (17 each) took ECoRSA past the target with their unbroken 34-run stand for the eighth wicket.

Earlier one down batsman, D. Ravikumar (44, 4x3), held the innings together adding 35 runs for the second wicket with K. Kumaraswamy (6) and 41 for the third wicket with Y.V. Saikumar (20, 4x2).

VPSC, which elected to bat, owed a great deal to A. Sriram (59 not out, 4x2), who helped the team reach 196 for seven in its allotted 50 overs. The Openers N. Srinivasa Reddy (29, 4x3) and V.V. Ramana (15) put on 37 runs. Gangadhar Kumar removed Ramana while Srinivasa Rao was run out. Gangadhar quickly struck again removing Vatekar for nought. Railway left-arm spinner Shankara Rao picked up four wickets.

The chairman of the Bar Council of India and former president of the Andhra Cricket Association, D.V. Subba Rao, gave away the trophies and cash awards.

He appreciated the The Hindu for sponsoring the tournament without break since its introduction 11 years ago.

Metro all-rounder R.V.C. Prasad was declared The Sportstar player of the tournament, which also carried a cash award of Rs. 1,000.

The following received special prizes and a cash award of Rs. 500 each: A. Sriram (best bowler), Shyam Sundar (best bowler) and H. Watekar (best all-rounder), all from VPSC. Man of the Match of the final: G. Shankara Rao (ECoRSA).

The scores: VPSC 196 for seven in 50 overs (A. Sriram 59 n.o., K.N.V. Krishnamohan 35, N. Srinivasa Reddy 29, G. Shankara Rao four for 38) lost to East Coast Railway Sports Association 198 for seven in 48.2 overs (D. Ravikumar 44, M.N. Vikram Varma 42, N. Shyam Sundar Rao three for 48).
