Forces to counter naxal menace

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, APRIL 18. More than 1,750 villages in five districts of North Telangana have been classified as extremist-affected by the police and forces were deployed depending on the sensitivity of the areas.

Though naxalite activity had come down drastically in the five North Telangana districts -- Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Warangal and Khammam -- over a period of time, police are taking no chances since the People's War continues to make its presence felt through its squads, especially in the forest areas. In the plain areas, naxalite action teams have been on the move of late and the police too deployed a sizable number of counter action teams.

Four Indian Air Force helicopters have been pressed into service to help the police teams reach the inaccessible areas in the jungles of Warangal, Khammam, Karimnagar and Adilabad districts. Only Nizamabad police have not requisitioned the helicopters, but should the need arise one of the choppers would be diverted to this district, police say.

According to the Warangal range DIG, T. Krishna Prasad, who is monitoring the situation in Warangal, Karimnagar, Khammam and Adilabad, there were 890 sensitive, 514 hypersensitive and 1,514 extremist-affected villages in these four districts. In Nizamabad there were 250 sensitive, 125 hypersensitive and 250 naxalite-affected villages, district SP, Madhusudhan Reddy said.
