Politicians now and then

Sir — Elected representatives were responsive and responsible to the people during the early 1950s. After every Assembly or Parliament session, the MLAs and MPs addressed meetings to inform their electorate about their contribution and sought their opinion. In my teens, I had the opportunity of hearing the eminent Parliamentarian, Lanka Sundaram, explaining his achievements regarding Caltex oil refinery.

The veteran politician, Tenneti Viswanadham, who led the agitation for steel plant and the Jai Andhra movement, exhorted the people to remain non-violent.

When some agitators tried to damage the All India Radio station, he admonished them and explained the pains he had taken to get it established. The present day politicians hold meetings only at the time of elections. What a difference!

Non-refund of deposits

Sir — The Company Law Board had directed Synergy Financial Exchange, Chennai, to pay its depositors at the contracted rate of interest immediately and inform the applicants of the decision.

Though six years have passed, no action has been initiated by the board against the `defaulting' non-banking finance company.

About 50,000 depositors, who had invested their hard-earned money, are suffering due to the "lack of sincerity'' in top officials of the Reserve Bank of India in regulating non-banking finance companies.

FM disappoints listeners

Sir — The programme "Theepi Gnapakalu'' being broadcast by Visakha FM station is disappointing to the listeners who tune the radio late at night with the fond hope of hearing some old songs rendered by Ghantasala, Suseela and others. Only songs from old films and a few oft-repeated songs are broadcast. Also, the programme at the week-ends is not restored.

Keep vacant

lands clean

Sir — Most of the vacant lands in Visakhapatnam city, especially in the old city area, are overgrown with weeds and used as garbage dumping grounds. Drain water is also being let into such lands and the stagnant water has become ideal ground for mosquito breeding.

The vacant land opposite King George Hospital, and that by the side of Sobha Nursing Home, stand testimony to the problem.

The municipal officials should insist on the landlords to provide proper enclosures to such vacant lands and collect "vacant land tax" and, if necessary, take action under Section 496 of Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Act, applicable to Visakhaptnam.
