WASHINGTON, APRIL 18. Reacting to the assassination of the leader of Hamas, Abdel Aziz Rantisi, the Bush administration has once again defended Israel's "right to defend itself from terrorist attacks." And Washington is asking "all parties" to exercise "maximum restraint" at this time. The White House issued a statement on Saturday on the killing of the Hamas leader, and while giving support to the Jewish state's policy of "targeted assassination," cautioned Israel to "consider carefully the consequences" of its actions. "As we have repeatedly made clear, Israel has the right to defend itself from terrorist attacks... ," the statement of the Press Secretary said.
