KOCHI, APRIL 18. Using cadaver tissue in plastic reconstructive surgery and pre-fabrication of tissue from one's own body are some of the cutting edge research areas in plastic surgery globally, according to Giorgio De Santis, Professor of Plastic Surgery and head of the Plastic Surgery unit in the teaching hospital at the University of Modena, Italy.

On a faculty visit here in Kochi at the 17th annual meeting of the Kerala Plastic Surgeons Association hosted by the Medical Trust Hospital, Dr. De Santis said that a lot of research has gone into reconstructive microvascular surgery. It has given rise to a number of complex methods to help rehabilitate the functional importance of various tissues and bones which have been lost due to either disease or accidents, he said.

Plastic reconstruction surgery is not just cosmetic. It is a surgery which restores the functional purpose of the tissues, improving the quality of life. Regarding the pre-fabrication of tissues, he said the clinical applications of the process had been tried successfully.
