Showers likely

CHENNAI, APRIL 18. The maximum temperature on Monday will be around 39 degree Celsius with a possibility of a shower or thundershower in some areas during evening or night.

On Sunday, Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded a maximum of 37.3 and 39.6 degree Celsius and a minimum of 27.9 and 28. The humidity was 71 and 63 per cent.

Power shutdown

Power supply will be suspended in parts of Pantheon Road, Mandaveli, S.K. Nagar, Kannadasan Nagar, Sowcarpet, Villivakkam, Nehru Nagar and Chitlapakkam on April 20 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. for maintenance work.

Bank branch opened

UTI Bank's branch at 69, Arcot Road, Virugambakkam, was inaugurated by P.J. Nayak, Chairman and Managing Director, on Saturday. Dr. Nayak said the bank signed a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Posts which would enhance its reach through the network of post office outlets.

Solar eclipse

A solar eclipse will take place on Monday between 5 p.m. and 9.08 p.m. It will not be visible in India, says a release from the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre. The eclipse will be partial and visible in southern parts of Africa and Antarctica. This year, there will be three more eclipses, two of the moon, says the release.

Empty grenade shells explode

Empty shells of grenades, imported as scrap from South Africa, exploded in a steel rolling mill near the Tiruvottiyur bus stand today.

The police said the blast occurred around 7.30 p.m. when one of the workers dumped some of the shells into an unused well on the mill premises. No one was injured but the well was damaged. Around 1,000 such empty shells were still lying in the mill. The police suspect that remnants of explosive substances in the shells could have caused the blast. A team from the bomb detection and disposal squad is investigating.

Medical camp

The Hindu Mission Hospital, Tambaram, conducted a medical camp at Kalkutti, near Perungudi, on Sunday. Three hundred and thirty three patients were treated for various ailments. Six of them were referred for free eye surgery and one for general surgery, says a release.
