Vajpayee's remarks

Sir, — Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has spoken about the difficulty in running a multi-party coalition government (and downplayed the comment subsequently). Surely, he is worried about the prospects of managing the Sangh Parivar, on the one hand, and the unreasonable demands of the allies, on the other. It is yet again clear that he is the right man in the wrong party.

S. Sankarasubramanian,
Madurai, T.N.

Sir, — The Prime Minister says he is tired of managing the coalition. But the NDA has drawn its many resourceful Ministers from among its coalition partners. I.K. Gujral and Deve Gowda who worked under far greater constraints never lamented about their predicament; nor did they undermine the contribution of their allies.

Jayasree Sarnathan,
Mysore

Sir, — There has never been anything such as retirement age for politicians. Mr. Vajpayee can continue as long as he wants to. The Opposition should not make this an electoral issue.

Besides, when the Opposition has not mentioned its prime ministerial candidate for elections 2004, why should the BJP name its successor?

Anirudh Govind Rajan,
New Delhi
