India criticises Israel for killings

UNITED NATIONS, APRIL 20. India has criticised Tel Aviv for targeted killings of Hamas leaders, saying the action was "unjustified and unacceptable." In a brief intervention in the Security Council debate on the Middle East yesterday, the Indian U.N. Ambassador, Vijay K. Nambiar, told Israel that targeted killing of Hamas leader Abdel Aziz Rantisi was ``unjustified and unacceptable'' and could not be "condoned" under any circumstances.

"Such action, following closely on the killing of the Hamas spiritual leader, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, can only lead to further destabilisation of the already fragile situation in the region and escalation of cycle of violence and counter violence," he said. But he also strongly criticised all acts of terrorism, asserting that there could be no justification for terrorism in any form from any source. Mr. Nambiar called for "moderation and restraint" in the region so as to enable peace negotiation to restart at the earliest.
