TUMKUR, APRIL 20. Polling in at least nine booths in Tumkur district began at 10.40 a.m. because of a technical snag that developed in the electronic voting machines. A large number of voters in Saptagiri Layout in Tumkur city turned up in the morning at the Nalanda Convent School there. Voters could not exercise their franchise at booth no. 198, as the polling staff failed to commission the voting machine and their efforts to secure a replacement did not materialise till 10.40 a.m. Meanwhile, many of the voters returned home disappointed. Another voting machine at Mavinahalli in Gubbi also went out of order and it was set right only in the afternoon. Polling was delayed in three booths in Pavagada taluk, two in Huliyurdurga Assembly constituency (Kunigal taluk), one each in Kallambella and Sira segments because of a snag in the voting machines. Preparations for the elections were hit on Monday after the polling staff went on an agitation against alleged corruption in payment of remuneration. The situation was tense after the Tumkur taluk Tahsildar, P. Basavaraju, allegedly assaulted Narayana Swamy, a teacher from Siddlaghatta in Kolar district, who was on election duty. The polling staff could not get conversant with the operation of the voting machines nor check their readiness because of the strike.
